2004 4Runner shift Console

I have 2004 4Runner Limited and noticed a difference between that and my buddies 2005. My drive options are L, 2, 3, and D, he has L, 2, 3, 4/D on his shift console. Are these the same transmission and what does his extra option give him verses the 2004?

thanks

the 2003 and 2004 4runner v6 only had a 4 speed auto (a340) and the 2005 -2009 had a 5 speed auto (a750). It gets better gas mileage then the 4 speed and adds a gear inbetween 3rd and 4th for a better torque band. I will be switching my 2003 to the 5 speed as soon as I find one in my price range. Last one I looked at was 6 thousand dollars for the transmission..... yikes....

I have also heard that people have done the 6 speed swap from the Tacoma into the 4runner but I dont see why they would do this as it actually takes away towing capabilities and gas mileage (according to stock numbers). Personally I am looking for a shift kit to be put into the 5 speed to allow for manual control and better shifting when under transmission control settings.
