06 Tacoma rear end

I just retrofitted an 02 Tacoma TRD third member into my 1990 V6 housing, which is an 8" rear end. My buddy has an 06 Tacoma Prerunner V6, and I was wondering if the rear end on these trucks are 8" because if it is, I was wondering if it would be possible to retrofit the locker from a 95.5-2004 Tacoma TRD into the 06 rear end. The reason I say this is because I have access to a TRD third from a 95.5-2004. I know they offer the TRD locker on these trucks too, but did they change it at all?

Is his prerunner a TRD offroad?

The Non-Trd and the TRD Sports definitely have an 8.4 rearend (or bigger 8" and it won't work). If it is the TRD-Offroad it will have the smaller 8" rearend with the e-locker but I still don't think it is the same as the older rearends as the gears are different.

No his is not a TRD. At the time his 86 4x4 was running, so he bought the 06 Tacoma in 2WD Prerunner Non-TRD. Well his 86 doesnt run anymore, so he is now wishing he had bought a 4WD, or atleast a TRD for the locker. I just did the locker retrofit into my 1990 V6 housing, so he was wondering if it possible on his. But you say that his rearend is 8.4" so it wont work... In that case, I still have the rearend housing from the 02 Tacoma 4x4 V6 TRD because I just used the third member, would that axle housing bolt up to his truck?

The 02 housing will be a few inches narrower.
