06 4Runner Limited AC ???'s possible leak

I've got a 2006 4Runner Limited and my AC was blowing hot on the drivers side and cold on the passenger side. I did some research to see if I could find a solution and found two answers: 1) add refrigerant, 2) check/replace the flapper in the ventilation system.
Well, since the air was getting warmer on the passenger side too I decided to go with the first option. When I checked the low side pressure it registered at 0 psi so I added a 20oz can of R-134a to the system. Despite emptying the entire can I to the system the psi still didn't reach the desired psi level set for the outside temperature. When I checked the car the air was blowing cold out of all vents so I thought all was well, but I noticed a slight smell to the air when I first got in the car. The smell seemed to disappear after a few moments so I thought little of it. I did that on Saturday and had no issues other than the slight smell when I got in the truck until this morning (Tuesday) when the smell was a little stronger, but more importantly after being in the truck for about five minutes or so my throat and my nasal cavity began to have a burning sensation. I shut the AC off as a result and yet the fumes/vapors still lingered and continued to come out of the vents so I closed them too and opened my windows up.

My questions are:
1) Can the refrigerant leak into the cabin?
2) How harmful are the gases? (I've been in and out of my truck all day, but haven't been in my truck for over 3 hours yet the burning sensation still persists)
3) How can I potentially fix this issue so I can drive my truck without ailment or sweating my butt off in the Texas summer heat?
4) Did I do something wrong to cause this? I know I didn't check the high side pressure since I don't have the right tools, so that is obviously a potential problem...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Seems that's you may have a leak coming from the evaporator. It's located in the blower assembly under/behind the dash... Good luck
