Yup.....CV Boot time

So my upper cv boots are totally torn asunder. They are simply laying on the axles. My question is. Is there a way to replace the upper boots without pulling the entire axle?

You could buy bolt on cv boots, but they are 2x-3x as expensive as the regular boots. I'd just do it the right way and take them off and replace each boot the correct way and feel good knowing you inspected, cleaned, and greased the joint thoroughly while it's off.

I probably should......and will.......but for the now (seeing as I am broke from reworking my head) Tell me more about these bolt-ons. Also, I read in another post that the upper cv boots on my year model are easy to replace "only 6 bolts and a clamp" any truth?

Just replace the whole axle. They're not that tough to remove, and to do a boot job right, you need to remove it in order to clean it up, inspect it, and regrease anyways. Changing the boot just adds work and no benefit.

If they're that ripped, the grease has become contaminated and who knows what kind of damage has been done to the axle.

$60-70 after core at Autozone, Advance, etc with lifetime warranty

yeah I see the benefit, and believe me they need replacing. There is mud/oil/grease/little rocks all up in there. Hmmmmm, I wonder if that has anything to do with going off-roading and fording that river up to the bumper....But I digress. I will probalby replace the whole deal but like i said, broke. I was just curious as to whether or not I could do it cheaper and easier.

If you've been off roading like that a lot and rocks and stuff are up inside the broken boot, it may be too late for you. If they were only busted, with no offroad use and no rocks, sand, etc were in it, it's probably still ok and just need new boots. Only way to find out is to clean them and inspect them yourself. If your want to save you'll need do it yourself and find out for sure. Though you should have $150 bucks in hand to prepare for the worse case scenario.

When it's all said and done, replacing the whole axle (which you can definitely do yourself) will cost you an extra $20 over the boot ... won't take long to save that up.

I agree, change the whole axle if you can. They're $69 at Autozone with a lifetime warramty. I punched a hole in a boot when I installed mine and stopped, took it back down and swapped it out for another no questions asked, and came back and installed it. I got to use the warranty before I even got it installed on the truck.

You'll be better off...

Ha Ha, I think I'll just put off the repair and let these axles go until I have the money for a full swap. Laifetime warranty too good to pass up. I've heard a lot about the manual hub kit. Where do i find one, how much, and what will I see in the way of mpgs?
