Yet, one more "which gear" thread
Ok, here is what I have, 95 4Runner, 3.0 auto with 4.56 gear and 225/75/15 tires. OME springs and shocks, 1.5 bj spacer.
What I want. 33-10.5-15 BFG KM2
What I know.... The correct gearing is 5.29.
What I would like to know... How much power will I loose when I put them on?
How bad is the power loss with 4.88? Was thinking it would be less $ to get used front assembly/ rear 3rd member from a junkyard. This way I can get snow tires in 31s also (living in NH and all).
I know the 4.56 - 33" will set my rpm off by about 650 rpm and 4.88 - 33" will offset it by 325 rpm...
So if I can get some input from people that have autos and have done the tire upgrades to help me with how much money I WILL need to spend after I get the tires.
Thank you all

Most recommend a 5.29 for a 33x12.5 on those with an automatic. However, you're planning a 33x10.5. It's 2" narrower so you'll have less rolling resistance. So maybe a 4.88 might be fine for that application. That's just a guess.
Since you want to spend little money, I'd say go with the 4.88s, just because it's possible to find them in the junkyard. You won't find factory 5.29s on any Toyota. Look for 1993-1995 4Runners with the G144 door code.

I have read most of them. Most of them are talking about a 5 speed, not auto. Auto has 4.88 for 31s while the 5speed has 4.56 stock. This is why I have asked. I know the auto likes to have some more rpm. And you may be right, i tend to overthink things as I just have the money to do it once and dont really like doing twice.
On the highway, it has been known to downshift to keep speed. I'd just like to know how others have faired with 4.88/33"/auto...

i have a 88 4runner automatic with 32x11.5R15. i regeared to 4.88 and my speedo shows 7mph faster than what it is suppose to be. i wanted to be over geared because most people dont understand that you are adding more weight no just in tires but in other mods/gear like bumpers, winches, camping gear, food/water and so on. i wanted a little more power. it does accelerate much better and i am able to stay in my powerband (3-4k) on steep hill grades maintaining 55-65mph
seeing as your going with 33s, i would say 4.88 would be great. now since you already have 4.56, i would throw the 33s on and see how you like it. it might be fine for your driving. i went with 4.88 because i have tons of armor and gear i take on ever trip
