Yet another TPS thread

I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but just want an experienced 'runner master to confirm.

I'm testing (was hoping to just adjust) the TPS on my '93 4runner 3VZE. Using a digital, auto-ranging, multimeter, here's the readings I'm getting:

VTA-E2: 0.744
IDL-E2 (0.020 in. feeler): NO READING
IDL-E2 (0.031 in. feeler): NO READING
VTA-E2 (TB fully open): 4.56
VC-E2: 5.56

I presume the NO READING for IDL-E2 (no matter where I adjust the TPS unit, with regard to the throttle body), means my TPS is dead...yes?

Additional Info: Pending I'm reading the FSM and all of the existing TPS threads correctly, viewing the throttle body as if it were oriented on the engine, I'm calling the top most contact E2, the second from the top IDL, the third from the top (or second from the bottom) VTA, and the bottom contact as VC.

I think your TPS may be fine. You may be having problems with comprehending your meter readings. With a .020" gauge, you should be reading just ever so slightly less than "infinite" or "open". You are saying you are getting "no reading" when in fact I belive you are reading "infinite" or "open"?

With the .030" gauge you should be reading "infinite" or "open". It may be a case where your .020" setting is off so marginally it wouldn't be affecting anything. Also this could be the differences in thickness of gauges and the crap on them (assuming you're using actual feeler gauges, I simply use a credit card, and a thinner gift card to measure this)

The IDL-E2 test would be the test that tests the transition from idle to normal operation. It is not terribly important that this is perfect. You just want to verify that it is making the transition at some point. You should be more concerned about checking the VTA-E2 and sweeping thru the entire range of the TPS and making sure it increases and decreases smoothly with no dead spots or dropouts.

edit: meant to link this in case you haven't read it http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

Thanks for the quick reply, Drew. By "NO READING," I mean the readout on my multimeter shows "O.L" (which is what it shows when the two probes aren't touching anything. If I touch the probes together directly (with the meter set on Ohms, of course), the screen reads 00.0.

I did connect VTA-E2 and worked the throttle. It does sweep up and down as smoothly as I imagine it can.

I'm using actual feeler gauges. I've tried every feeler that I have from 0.010" to 0.035" and tried working the throttle with the probes of my meter set to IDL-E2. I get the same "O.L" no matter the gauge used/position. I can't get my meter to give me anything when connected to IDL and E2.

O.o

I have an issue where it wont throw a check engine light but when I jumper it to set timing, it gives me a TPS error. I tried 3 different used TPS that worked on the trucks and each one would fail one of the test the 4crawler shows and the FSM. Each one would fail a different test and none of them failed the same test. I will be installing a new TPS this weekend and want to see what results I get when I do the test on the new one. I will post my results later. Some say setting the TPS is easy, some say it is a pain. In my opinion, it is a pain. Especially if it isnt on the engine or assembly isnt in a vise to hold the feeler gauge, test leads, and operate the linkage.
