I'm going to have to agree with everyone else, only cause it's your first ride, and it's going to be a DD

If it was a trail-rig only, I'd say go for it, and slowly put it together; but a 350 swap into a DD? I think you could do a fresh rebuild with mild hop-ups like boring, cam, header, maybe some porting to the head and intake, and be satisified, for a lot less than $2k. And it'll probably be a lot more reliable than a regular ol 350, unless you bought a brand new crate motor to drop in, but I garantee that'll put you over your budget before you even address anything else

Last +500hp diesel I "saw" was a 12 cylinder Detroit in an older Kenworth "wrecker" (heavy tow-truck), in the early 90's. I'm not saying they don't make them any more but... as I alluded to, most over-the-road semi's aren't even really anywhere near that: 150-300hp... and the Cummins, Navistar (International Harvester) or Duramax (Isuzu) used in the Dodge, Ford and GMC/Chevy trucks aren't pushing near 500hp either.

actually, per Caterpillar http://www.cat.com/cda/layout/cda/la...5&x=7&f=227132 ... 2337 hp
... and an Electromotive SD90 produces in excess of 6000hp.

ever thought about something a little more practical..like a 4.3 chevy v6..or a buick V6??...not as much HP as a 350..but still DAMN good numbers..i know mine will be somewhere around 190-200hp..(4.3 bored, with a cam and all that, high rise intake with a 4bbl carb)

yea a TBI or a CPI vortec will show much greater numbers with those mods..mines just going to have a rebuilt quadrajet 4bbl...im not looking for a high horsepower motor..it wouldnt bother me to put a rebuilt stock 4.3 in there..just as long as i got more power than that danged ole 22R i'll be happy...the only reason im even going for this 4.3 is because i know the guy that built the motor..and he knows his stuff...of course he did manage to crack both heads within no time...idk how that happened..kinda has me worried though..lol

lolz
I can do 85 in mine (sometimes in 5th gear even) if:
... I have a one mile head start
and
... the ground is either flat or runnin downhill
or
... I'm drafting a semi
or
... I have no problem watching watching (yes a double take) my gas gauge needle move faster than the minute hand on my watch

I wouldn't trade my DD 20mpg in the city 22RE for anything, unless it was strictly a trail rig!

If you're talking torque, then it doesn't matter how much time elapses. Torque is not dependent on time, but horsepower is.

Assuming a flat torque curve (say an electric motor), horsepower will increase with rpms, but torque will always be the same no matter the speed.

But I'm just being nitpicky

IF your frame needs repairs, putting a big ol heavy powerful sbc can only end badly...fix the 22re and get a k5 blazer for your big heavy chevy needs.
