Wobbly CV Joint

On my 94 4runner (4X4), I can move the outer CV joint (only on the drivers side) by holding on to the CV Boot. I can move the CV joint about 1/8 of an inch in any direction expect in and out. When I am driving on anything but flat, smooth pavement, I can hear the CV Joint rattle. The CV Joint boot is not damaged. Is the CV Joint bad? Could it be caused by loose or damaged bearings?

Thanks,
Christopher

Spindle bushings are gone.. pretty common.. I just replaced mine not too long ago..had the exact same symptoms. It'll get rid of the rattle you are describing. Don't let it go forever like I did because eventually the bushing will spin on the end of your CV axle and ruin it. It will make a really loud hum for about 20 seconds and then quit if that happens.

Your bushings are gone but are you sure the rattle isn't the brake pads slapping the rotor. Sometimes the springs that keep them apart stop working because they are rusted to death or have been damaged by heat.

The rattle could be caused by the brakes, which I will also check, but the Spindle bearings are definitly in need of replacement. Thank you all for your advice!
