Why do I smell gas when I start up my truck?

On the 3.0 engine the CSI is on the passenger side of the intake plenum, at the top above where the EGR return pipe attaches to the plenum. It has a fuel line and an electrical connection on it. (I'll let some one else give you the location for the 22RE.) It is held on by 2 10 or 12 mm nuts... super easy to remove.
Here is a test you can run. Remove the CSI from the plenum but do not disconnect the fuel line or the electrical connection. Place the CSI in an empty jar and have a buddy crank the motor. (The motor should not start unless you block off the CSI opening in the plenum.)
When the key is turned to the run position, the injector should spray briefly then stop. If it continues to seep or leak, it is faulty. I assume the same test could be run on the 22RE.
If your CSI is toast, you can either replace it or remove it. If you replace it, they run $130 from AutoZone and $200 from the stealership. Some folks just remove it and make a block off plate for the plenum. That makes the truck harder to start, but once it warms up a little, the CSI serves no function so you don't miss it.
Good luck,
WJ

If your smelling raw fuel too another common Toy problem is the little screw in the Fuel Pulse Dampener backing out, usually if you take that plastic cap off the screw is just chilling in the dome doing nothing and that is obviously a major fuel leak, you would also have a hard start symptom and rough idle due to low fuel pres. It can disguise itself as a faulty CSI like stated above too... I've seen it plenty of times at the dealership

fuel pulse dampner is on most older yota's on the 3VZE it is under the upper plenum and on the back of the passenger side fuel rail. There is a plastic cover on them that looks like a dome, like I said common problem I run into at the dealer is the little screw that has a gasket on it backs itself out over time and just chills in the cover. It will cause all the problems I stated above, it looks like a regulator without a vacuum port you cant miss it

not sure the location but it should most def have one
this is what a Toyota Fuel Pulse Dampener looks like

Underneath that plastic hat is usually where the leak occurs, there is a screw with a gasket underneath that backs itself out over time, the one pictured above actually looks like a fuel rail from a 7MGTE Supra motor. With that screw backed out not only do you get a leak and bad smell of raw gas, you also get low and little to no fuel pres and make the car run rough or not at all and also makes it hard to start usually with an extended crank

Attached to the front end of the fuel rail, on the underside. (As mentioned in post 3 ) At least, that's where it was on the pics I've seen.
Technically, Toyota calls it the "pulsation damper" It's misspelled on the 1sttoyotaparts site as the pulsation dampner
