buns of steel, foot of lead....

Tire pressure, air filter, tune-up if needed, o2 sensor, great advice, but if your dad's getting signifcantly better mileage you might check the driver pressure too.

How are you calculating mpgs?

Anyone else want to chime in here? I'm getting an average of 12-13mpg. About 200mi per 15gal. I pretty much drive back and forth to work, come home for lunch - 4mi each way, run to the store - 3-4mi., and that's about it. All my changes are in my sig. The exhaust is all new. The o2 sensor is good. I keep a pretty good eye on the psi's. Seafoam has been done. Before I put the header, high-flow cat, Magnaflow, 2.25" pipes, 2" BL and new clutch, I recall getting close to 200mi per tank. Is this the result of my changes and I should get used to it?

that doesn't really sound too bad to me considering those are short trips and you're not even really get up to operating temp.

I see what you mean there. I always let it warm up before I take off. The temp gauge gets to normal, but that's only the coolant and not oil, tranny, etc. I'm taking an 80mi or so trip today so I'll see how it does with that. I'm anxious for the warm weather to get here too and see what changes occur.
Oh, and oops. I just noticed in my other post I said before the changes I was getting 200mi/tank, I meant 300mi/tank.

sounds like mine when I had a burnt valve...but in your case why rev it so high? its a truck it wont go fast if you push it so shift at 3k 3.5k you'll learn as you go when you can short shift and when you need to rev it a bit more.

yea ive learned that. now shifting at 3-3.5. seems to be doing a lil better with the milage. not quite sure what it is yet. to tell you the truth im afraid to put gas into it to see how much ive used. i dont want to know the bad news. ALL of my driving is city driving. and i mean all of it. i have yet to take it onto the freeway. i only drive to work and to school and back. 10 mins. at a time tops. right now im at about 2/3rds of a tank left and ive only driving a lil over 60 miles. its like i can watch the needle as it moves towards E. it sucks. i dont know what it is. it has to be me. inoreder for my dad to get 17 and me get less than 9. granted he drove all highway miles. but i could imagine maybe a drop off to like 14 or 13 but less than nine is crazy. all i know is im gunna go broke. spend more money on gas getting to work than i will make at work.

For my 92 3.0, there seems to be a pretty big disparity between city and highway mileage. Highway mileage around 20-21 mpg. City mileage just over 14. It's an automatic. You can probably do a little better with your 5-speed. Just have to make sure everything, and I mean 'everything', is tuned and operating within spec. That doesn't just mean electricals, tire pressure is key.

Just got 200 Miles out of my first Full Tank of Gas on My 88 V6 4Runner Does'nt Sound to Good for 15 Gallons.....Truck has 285,000 Miles on it and I had it Up to 95 Mph Without Being Too Scared Like I said I did Some Experimenting with Top speed, Flooring it To Check Tranny slippage ETC. I took it on a 120 Mile Road Trip Last Night With No Problems. I will Drive this Tank Like it is a Domestic and See How it Does. I Checked tire Pressure it was at About 28=Low and the Air Filter Was clogged to the Gills. I hope Tire Pressure and filter Help out.

those things would DEFINITELY be limiting your mpg. my new tires were under-inflated when they were first put on & i could actually see the fuel gauge needle creeping south while on the highway.

well i just got to check my tire pressure. the front were at 26psi and the back were a lil over 30psi. the door says to have the front at 26. well thats what i got from it. and the back to be at 35. i wanted to put some air in my tires but i cant find to tire air hook up for the compressor so i cant do it. i guess ill have to go to the gas station. what do you guys run your tires at. should i have the front less than the back or all of them the same?

If I got 14 mpg in town I'd cream my jeans! I get between 8-10 mpg in town. I drive strictly in town right now. My trucks daily routine is something like this:

1) start truck, 8 blocks to work, shut off truck
2) start truck, drive 8 blocks home for lunch, shut off truck
3) start truck, drive 8 blocks back to work, shut off truck,
4) start truck, drive 8 blocks home, shut off truck

It absolutely is killing my mileage, that and I've noticed a difference in the winter as opposed to warmer weather.

I've got fresh air filter, new plugs, new plug wires, new fuel filter, new cap and rotor, tire pressure correct..........only thing left for me is to check the o2 sensor sometime.
