where to get a speedometer gear ??!
I bought an 89 Odyssey RV that sits on a 1 ton Toyota. It has the V6 and a 5 speed manual transmission. The speedometer is off almost 10% at all speeds but the tires are the stock size. I think this must mean the rear end was changed from a 4:10 to a 4:56 ratio. To fix this I need a speedo gear for a 4:56. I have been all over trying to find what the heck part to get with no luck. The sites I find make it hard to even sort out anything about the various speedo gears they have or how many teeth the gears have. Even the Toyota dealer could only tell me they have this or that part number but didn't know what the specs were on those gears. I called a place in CA that is supposed to make adjuster mechanisms but never got a call back. I don't need the stock gear. I need a gear that will turn the speedometer cable at 90% of the speed so that should mean more teeth as I see it. Does any one have any idea what gear or part number I need? I've spent about 6 hrs hunting for this.

As I said, I had tried the dealer. The best they could do was list two part numbers that they thought were stock parts for my truck. They didn't know what the difference was, how many teeth they had, what differential ratio they were for, or anything else. just part numbers. They even went and asked a couple of other people at the dealership and had no clue. So they sure didn't know what speedo gear would be right for a 4.56/1 gear ratio.
Of course I don't need this to know how fast I am really going, and I can do the conversions to figure out how far I have travelled. It's just a PITA to have to go through that and I'm trying to check my MPG and methods I am trying out to improve the MPG. I will try a shop in town that does custom 4x4 work. If I can find the answer I will post it here so we'll have some record of what speedo gear part number works for 4.10 and a 4.56 differentials
