Wheeling woes
As some of you may have read I went wheeling for the first time this past Saturday. I did well considering I was the only rig on tires smaller than 35's and the only rig not locked front and rear..... and the only Toyota in a group of 24 Jeeps.
I missed crawling my first 5 1/2 foot ledge because of 2 reasons.
1) I was about an inch shy of planting a tire while approaching from straight on
2) The spotter didn't want me to approach at an angle because "If you break something you can't come back next year". He was laughing but there was an undercurrent of "you ain't Jeep...... go home" in his tone.
Alright Jeeper lets take the next step.
I need a little bit of lift. I REALLY want to SAS this thing and run 35's and 5.29's but that just isn't in the budget. So my best money option is this.
Ball joint lift on the front for 1 1/2 inches and shackles or springs in the rear. No worries on the install. My concern is that I have the low profile bumpstops in the front end and I've read that I can tear CV boots (that's the rubber thing right???) at full droop. I am serious about not getting a tire off the ground or dropping to far into anything and I mean it.
So can I machine some 1/2 inch spacers for the upper bumpstop and not risk tearing anything?
I ask because I want to go back next year with a mild lift, my 31's, maybe a locker in the front and some more armour and run that ledge right behind the 35 inch equiped Rubicons and show them that a budget build is just as capable as 30,000$ worth of factory rig.
Thanks for the advice.

i would definitely do springs instead of shackles. yes the cv boot is the rubber thing and ive torn them before its not major but its a pita i would say do the bj spacers and get new cv's your not likely to tear a fresh boot its usually when theyre old and worn that they tear. you could also just get some stock bump stops for the droop limiters from a junkyard..

Good idea. But I would just replace the boots. Toyota joints are better then all the aftermarket junk out there. Do the boots and install the spacers. Make sure you get long travel shocks.
I might consider 63" chevys in the back, remove a leaf to get it down to around 2" of lift. You will have loads of flex.
