I have a 3.0 4runner with an auto trans. 4.88 gears. Quick newb question as I've always ran 22re manual transmissions. Am I supposed to run offroad with OD off and ECT on?

Ive only wheeled it once and on the way home I was kinda upset that I didn't even try OD off and ECT on.

 

od off wont really help you much, unless youre going fast enough to hit o.d.

ect adjusts the shift point to allow higher rpm before shifting, so that could be beneficial.

 

Since you didn't mention any other info.
Do you have the A340H or A340F auto trans?

The A340H redirects OD to 4WD making the OD switch on or off moot, ECT is your own perspective on wether you want the shift points higher or lower.

I am not sure about the A340F since it has a manual transfercase, I am assuming OD works in 4WD, Somone chime in on the A340F.

 

One difference is that the Tundra A340F torque converter is heavier. In a quest to keep from grenading transmissions, this is a good thing. The Tundra torque converter is roughly 5 pounds heavier. The big change with the A340F transmission / transfer is that the front output was moved to the opposite side / driver side.

 

Whatever trans I have I ran today with the ECT on and left the OD alone. I liked it a ton better that wheeling with the ECT off. Geat in the sand and mud. Only thing is, both of the people I wheel with have chevys and my day ended early again. Both times, both trucks had trans problems and a carb problem. You know them chevy people..... can't talk sense into them.

 

I usually just place it in 2 nd hi range untill i get to a climb or decent the i use low and low 1st for engine breaking on decents

With the 340 h be mindfull of hill climbs you may need to run them a little over full if it starts to suck air. Still trying to find the sweet spot on mine. For reference the only trail ive had this issue in is Bullfrog in the Couger Buttes area. Mostly on chicken hill.
