What type of ATF to use

I am going to change the transmission filter and fluid in my '92 4Runner. I went to buy Dexron III ATF, and the closest I can find is Dexron/Mercon mix. Is this acceptable to use or should I keep looking for straight Dexron III?

Yup, Dex IV works fine.
I don't believe that Dex III is available anymore and Dex iV is "backwards" compatible.

Dex 3 is being phased out. May be available in some places, but expect all production to cease within the next year.

The mix stuff probably wont hurt. Hell, I've put dex3 into a dex4 tranny with no issues. Its all propaganda, man.

I could not seem to find dexron IV.

The guy at the parts store said that Mercon was the Ford standard and Dexron was the GM standard, even though both types were almost the same. I went ahead and put the dex/merc in, so hopefully it will be fine.

I use III until my stockpile disapears. I believe I will still be able to get it, even after it disapears through Chevrons industrial MD3 product.

I would use AMSOIL ATF, or the new ATF they have out which is supposed to be the cats arse. Amsoil makes arguably the best synthetic transmission fluid you can buy, or fluid, period. The fluid lasts twice as long, runs cooler, shifts better, especially during cold weather, and will overall protect the transmission better.
