I've got a 89 4x4 Pickup with a 22RE and the 5 speed trans, so what gears do I likely have?? The truck is completely original. I also would like to know what model came factory with lower gears (4.88s and 4.56s) that would fit in my truck by changing the whole chunk. I just don't know what year/configuration truck to look for when searching for replacement thirds.

Your truck has 2-pinion (4 cyl) 4.10 diffs. The 2-pinion bit is important if you ever buy a locker.

As far as I know:

Prior to 1992 (the year Toyota introduced the 31" tire option) all 5spd trucks and 4Runners came with 4.10s, and all automatics came with 4.30.

From 1992-1995, trucks with 5spds and the 31" factory tire option came with 4.56s, and automatics with the 31" tire option came with 4.88.

Throughout the years all 5spds with 225/75R15 (~28") tires came with 4.10 (5spd) and 4.30 (auto).

No post-1995 diffs with fit without modification to the axle housing.

 

I think pretty much any 10 bolt will work. the later models with the e lock need some cutting to the Axel housing. I have the 3.0 with 150R and the 4.56 gears give it enough low end with 31 inch tires that you don't need gas pedal when taking off in first, just ease off the clutch, same with reverse. the RPM's are a bout 200 higher than the 4.30 at 60 miles per hour. But every gear feels stronger now. I will be putting 33's on as soon as Sam's has a discount on BFG's I am not sure how much that will take away from my new found power. I probably would need 4.88's to get the same feel.
The gearing in your tranny is different so you may need a different rear end to get equivalent effects.

 

I think 91 was the year Toyota intro'd the stock 31" tire package. Before then they offered a "big tire" option. My '91 from the factory came with 31's, and 4.56's and it's auto. I wish it had 4.88's.

 

3rd gen 4runner Non-Diff lock diffs will fit in. So, anything in a 4runner from 84-02 will work, depending of course on the gear ratio

 

matt, i have a 90 4runner with 32's and the axle code says that i have the 4.56s... so might wanna recheck your info...
but i also have the 3.0, so dunno if that changes anything...

 

Weird. 1992 the idler arm O.D. was increased, to allow for bigger tires.

maybe they learned their lessons with the 90 and 91s...

 

i have a 93 pickup with a 5spd 3slow. the truck is pretty quick on 31's and i just don't know the gear ratio. the drivers door jamb stick has been ripped off by some dumbass before me. i have checked at the dealer and gave my vin number. they were like we have to see that drivers door jamb but i dont have one. then the guy was like check the diff for a tag. i checked under and dont see the tag. is there any other way to find out the axle gear ratio without turning the tire and counting the drivershaft revolutions.

Pull the 3rd member and count the Ring teeth and divide by the number of pinion teeth...

Just do the lifted tire method, takes 10 minutes by yourself...

Hey Matt, my truck came with 31" tires and 4.56 gears from the factory
My neighbor has a 1988 (yes thats the year on the sticker) 3rd gen with 31" tires, I should see what gears he has..

 

Mine also came with 31's and 4.56's from the factory.
