Those stickers have errors! My truck has 225/75 r15 listed as the tire size, but the factory sticker and the gearing is for 31's (4:56)

5spd models 89-95 had 4:11 in 225/75 original equipment and 4:56 when equipped with 31's

I was unaware of a 4:30

This is still getting more strange. I tried the spinning the wheel trick. I ended up with a ratio of 5.37. I had my wife give me a hand and she swears that she rotated the tire 20 times. I counted 53 rotations and the line on the drive shaft stopped about 3/4 away around on a 54th revolution, hence 53.75 devided by 10 = 5.37. You guys tell me what you think. Does that make any sense? Remeber from my towing thread that I mentioned this thing is a dog out of the hole with no load. Real bad towing. Is it possible that this thing is over geared and thats why I can't get my highway towing speed above 65mph approx. I can go down the road 70 miles per hour dry but thats really pushing it. I do so little of that kind of driving though. Mostly stop and go. Always seems like it can't get out of it's own way while accelerating. I checked with Randy's ring and pinion web site and they do sell a toyota 5.29. I also checked with thier calculator and that RPM matches the speed and tire size with that gear, or at least pretty close.

If you lived closer, I'd take that bet.
- The LOWEST gears he has are definitely 4.56. 4.88's were only in automatics

I'm not saying it came from the factory like that, someone regeared it already. It's either 4.88 with 32" tires or 5.29 with true 33" tires.

Hey Bug, measure your tire diameter.

Nope, stock 5.29 is unheard of.

As far as re-gearing....no way! Unless done by a dealer which I doubt, I work with the guy that owned it prior. He's the original owner. We are in the navy together. He bought it out in Utah when he was stationed in SoCal. Wanted to avoid Cal emissions, thank god! Owned it ever since, sold it to me about two months ago. Just put on brand new 33X12.5r15 BFG Allterrains on the month prior to selling it to me. Had 72 miles on the original paper work from the dealer when he bought it in 92. I flat out asked him if he ever changed the gears in it and he looked at me like I had six heads. Although I went and measured, the actual physical tire dimension it's closer to 32".

add trucks with a v6 9 times out of ten came with 4:56 even though it came with 225's still i think you will be fine putting in 4:88's also if you're going to be changing the gears any way put us out of our misery and pull the rear diff and let us all know.

I have a 94 dx extra cab, v6 manual with the same axle code. When i tried to figure out my gear ratio i found the 3:15 as well on the web. That didn't seem right at all. I did the wheel spin and came up with 4:30's. I am the second owner, but i have all the service records from the first owner, who was more anal about his records than me. No mention of regearing, so I can only assume that it came from the dealer with 4:30's.

I bought it with 31's on it, which it still has for now, but the door sticker says something else. My only explanation is that perhaps the dealer at the original sale changed the gearing and tires. I don't have any records that say this though.

X2

BTW number of teeth on the ring gear / number of teeth on the pinion gear = your answer.

Can you do the wheel spin method without jacking the truck up?
I don't trust my crappy jack.

you only need to get it high enough to be able to spin it, and only one wheel needs to go up. Your spare tire jack will do that.

If you keep it low, say 1/4" off the ground, and keep your fingers out from under it, then it won't fall far if your jack is really that bad and gives out. It would have less impact than dropping off curb.

Your misery MSR, how the hell do you think that I feel. LOL! C'mon guys I'm asking for some help here. I know that it seems that the only reasonable explanation for 5.29s would have been a gear change. I swear to you guys, I really don't think that is the case. I know that someone mentioned this truck suposed to be "Ultr-rare standard cab 4x4 V-6 DLX" Could that hav been a dealer add on or demo type thing?

Maybe a factory prototype from the R&D dept.

Putting in your tranny (R150F) with 4.88 gears and 32" tires the calculator shows 2582 rpms @60 mph in 5th gear, almost excactly what you reported.

Putting in 5.29 gearing shows 2799 rpms @60mph in 5th gear.
