Okay gonna try and fix a few things hopefully you could give me a few ideas on what it could be it's a 89 pickup with a 22re in it

1. When going up the driveway in 1st gear I usually just barely push the gas in and sometimes it bucks and acts like it's gonna stall out but keeps going the tach never changes or nothing but I don't know other times it bucks hard for a long long while til I get to 4th gear or so then everything starts acting right.

2. When I run it for a while then go to start it back up it just barely starts,always does but just barely
Fires

3. 1 out of 10 times I go to start it it just goes click. I get out and go jiggle the battery wires and she comes right on back to life

4. It idles all over the board. Sometimes it will idle at 8-900 other times it'll be at 3-400 and everywhere in between

Any suggestions? It's a new motor only 20K or so on it the check engine light came on as well after the muffler came off one day hunting. Got a new one on and it's been on since then

Well, if jiggling the battery cables changes things, the first thing would be to clean and overhaul all battery cables and engine grounds. Bad or weak grounds cause all sorts of troubles.

 

. For a poor, inconsistent idle, check your Throttle Position Sensor. If that's not up to snuff it can take a big effect on all phases of engine performance. Great link on 4crawler on TPS adjustment and troubleshooting.

Just how long has this been happening??

Just curious do you ever do any maintenance Like tune ups look for potential problems before they become major??

 

It hasn't been long it just started since the other day it did it going down the road for a little while then ever since then it does it on start ups but the battery cable thing has been going on since I got the truck

Good advice so far. I'll also add that erratic idle is often caused by a bubble in the cooling system. If you've run low on coolant recently or drained some of it, that's something to check. Search on this forum for how to "burp" the cooling system.

 

I fixed the idle by adjusting the vacuum control screw the idle stays the same rpms at all and I drove it 40 minutes checked all the grounds and tightened 3 of them and it hasn't done any bucking or anything since I did that either so maybe that fixed it idk ill see tommorrow
