Besides a must read for everyone concerned about HG's in particular, it should also be a must read for all the silly rocket scientist here that claim it's ok to disable/remove the EGR..

I forgot the write-up mentioned EGR:

Contributing factors include an inoperative EGR system (which helps cool combustion temperatures under load),
What I don't understand is how the EGR helps cool combustion temps, is it just because there is less O2 in the recirculated gas therefore making the overall A/F richer? I guess I just don't understand the EGR system or WTF it is suppost to do anyway. BTW my 2001 5VZ doesn't have EGR, I think Toyota stopped using the EGR around 98 on the 5VZ, sometime around then anyway.

Maybe a day late and a dollar short, but I have plenty of experience rebuilding Ford FE motors too, 10:1 compression motors, cast iron block and aluminum(aftermarket, but still aluminum) heads, and same head bolt pattern as the 3vz I just recently did a hg job on(plus 2 more bolts a side 'cause it's a V8). There's lots of guys doin heavy towing/hauling, drag racing, all sorts of heavy duty and abusive driving without hg problems. I second the crossover idea and the poor material idea, seein as how my hg was fine on my Toy, even though the recall was done at about 54,000 miles and it now has 188,000 on it. I only had to remove the heads to extract a broken off spark plug!

Well, my HG recall was done at 88k miles and I made it to 218k before it blew one. Of course, I'd overheated it a couple of times...
