Water pump impeller size riddles...

Hey folks,
I am trying to make sense of the two different water pump impeller sizes in the 22R engine. I am in Australia, so i know the parts used in the 4Runners vary slightly to the US models in the same years.

I have an 1989/90 (coil rear) 4Runner with a 22R with a 59mm impeller. I have a 22R from a 1996 Hilux that also has a 59mm impeller.
I went to the parts store and gave them the VIN of another Hilux, this one a 1989 and they gave me a 69mm impeller water pump (haven't removed the old one yet to check).

The 1996 22R has the pear shaped exhaust ports, so i can assume it is the post 85 engine...

If i buy a timing cover from the USA for a 85-95 22R what size impeller will it have? Are the 69mm pumps for the pre 85 engines?

Thanks so much!

Can`t help with the measurements but the older 22R series engines took a different water pump .

Which will bolt on just fine but the impeller was pushed into the timing cover and would not turn

Yeah, i put the 69mm pump on my cover and it doesn't fit on.
I have a timing cover ordered from the US, for a 85-95 and just need to know what pump size it will use...

For what it is worth Aisin Aftermarket lists one number for the 22R/RE application WPT-007

I would think maybe you have a Aisin Aftermarket geared for the models in your country

For what it is worth Napa lists the one pump for the 1989 22R/RE at a 59 mm length not sure if that helps

The 59mm impeller should fit the USA timing cover for 1985-1995.

I just went out and measured my new water pump (NPW brand) that I bought from 22RE Performance.

Thanks guys!
I can sleep easy tonight knowing that my 89 22R in Australia is a 85-95 version (59mm).

On a similar note - my 22R was running hot when idling and would only cool down if i revved it up. My water pump was making a strange noise (almost like air bubbles in the water/turbulent/water gushing noise) so i bled the system but it had no effect. I then removed the pump to see if the impeller had come loose or something, but all seems fine. When i reinstalled the pump and refilled the radiator, and started the engine up - the pump was perfectly silent. Then once the engine got up to temperature and the thermostat opened and air bubbles bled out (through the radiator opening - cap was off), the pump started with the awful noise again!!

I think if the pump had a bad bearing the noise would be there all the time? Or maybe the bearing only makes a noise when the shaft is under load with water? Or could it be some type of air blockage causing the pump to cavitate and make a weird noise. Does anyone know what a cavitating 22R water pump sounds like? Also, i have no idea why a noisey water pump would cause the engine to only cool when revving it up - as i checked and the impeller is still connected to the shaft?

These engines can be a problem getting air out of your cooling system

I put a tee in the heater hose and fill the coolant via the radiator till it comes out of the Tee .

If this in not a option for you jack the front of the vehicle or park on a incline making the radiator cap opening the highest point in the cooling system .

This must be done every time you drain the coolant

Ok, perhaps an air blockage is the problem. The tee sounds like an option.
Do you have a pic of where you put the tee?
