Water proofing!

To make a long story short, this past weekend I took my 4runner out wheeling at a local mud hole (thats all we have in Florida) and I ventured into a hole that was several feet too deep for my truck.

Motor got hydro locked, and the interior flooded with about 6" of water.

I got the truck back running and for they most part everything is ok.

But my biggest beef is that when I pulled up the carpet out of my 4runner to clean it, and to dry it and the rest of interior out, I noticed there was about 5 major electrical connectors that sit under the passenger and drivers side seats. Which of course, they were all filled with mud/water, and several were melted and basically junk. So after a lot of re-wiring I was able to get most things electrical working again, but why on earth would Toyota put all the major electrical plugs in a spot that could so easily get wet?

The connectors operate everything from the rear windows, tail gate window, fuel pump, tail lights, turn signals, ect...

Also, the ECU resides in the passenger side kick panel????? Are you kidding me? It is only about 4 inches up from the floor. I got lucky and the passenger side was the high side in the hole I got into, but why would they mount it so low in the vehicle??

I am going to be doing some major rewiring of all things electrical in my 4runner and routing all this stuff through the headliner, but this is just ridiculous!

Has anyone else had problems with this sort of stuff after taking on water or is it just me?

I believe 4crawler makes a relocation kit to put the ECU in the glove box.

A snorkel will do you no good when all your electrical connections that run your truck are under water.

Hmmm... i doubt that designing the cab around the need for deep water crossings was very high on the engineers priority list for a civilian vehicle.
