Red face

I would venture like any other product it is put out to bid whatever refinery is the lowest bidder gets the contract for the length of the contract .

Which could be in gallons packaged or a length of time.

If your buying the product it might tell you on the container .

Then the product could be bought in bulk(rail or trailers) and packaged by Walmart

Our trucks need a higher zinc content oil then ASI oils have. So with knowing that who cares who makes it.

It's about engine design. All modern engines and probably at least since the last 2 decades use roller cam followers, which means the arms controlling the opening/closing of the valves have a roller that turns with the cam lobes.

Our 22re's rocker arms are a modified tappet-lifter design. They're similar looking to roller arms, but have a fixed pad instead. This design creates more friction than a roller and zinc helps prevent the cam lobes from getting wiped flat by clinging to vertical surfaces and bringing a film of oil along with it. Unfortunately high levels of zinc are bad for the exhaust catalyst so it's always being reduced as newer engine design allows for it.

High-end builders (such as 22reperformance) that work on 22re's recommend a zinc-rich break-in oil with any new cam for 400 miles and then whatever you like (Valvoline conventional, for one appears to have good used oil analysis in a 22re, according to a test result I saw on BITOG).

So what that means is that as long as your camshaft isn't new, don't worry too much about zinc content cause there's not much you can do besides using a diesel-specific or racing oil. It's interesting that 22reperformance doesn't have anything to say about those specialized oils because they build some real nice 22re's...

Decision... decisions... topics seem to come around and around on forums. This was a topic 2 yrs ago or so. Several ppl were having cams go flat or problems with rockers.

I just googled zinc content of different oils, good to live in the age of information!!! Pretty much any oil that is ASI compliant has a low zinc content. With guidelines constantly strictening on zinc as emissions levels have dropped. So research/analyzis from a few years age will not be as relivent to day as it was at publication. So that's why I recommend you research it and decide for yourself.

Just like, did you know you shouldn't use just any gear oil in our manual transmissions. Most of what's sold in auto parts stores is bad for synchro life.

I personally use rotella synthetic. But there's a few oils that have higher zinc content and yes they are labeled for Diesel engine use. Cool thing I enjoy about owning my old yota is the things it's taught me. Have fun and do your research if you want your truck to last.

I hope my rebuild gets to see half that much mileage. Nice job getting so close to 1/2 million. Are you the original owner?

$600 is a steal in that condition. I'd love a 2wd standard cab someday and I expect I'll have to pay a lot more for something that needs work.

Sweet deal.... ridden in a couple super high mileage yotas. Blew my stock motor hydro locking it at 200k. 1st remans 45k. 2nd has close to 30k going strong. Nothing compares to a factory motor.
