Hi guys and gals long time reader only posted once or twice. need advice.

Ok heres the deal. I got a 86 4runner. 22re auto. I bought a complete 5 speed setup everything needed to make my auto a 5 speed. Well finaly got around to installing it . And the bearings inside are shot. sounds like a rocky margarita being made in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th. I no 4rth is straight threw thats why it dont make noise.

Now to my questions
Whats the pros and cons of the w56 top shift and forward shift. Does one have a better tcase then the other?"
The tcase on my bad 5 speed works fine.
my tcase on the auto works fine.
Dude who sold me the bad w56 topshift. said he still has a truck in his lot that has a forward shift trans in it. I payed 375 for the bad trans and setup he said he sell me the forward shift trans and tcase driveshafts crossmember for 100 bucks.

Can i just drop out my topshift. and reuse the clutch flywheel pressureplate. slave cyl on the forward shift? Only thing i should have to change is make the hole in the floor little bigger correct ?

if they are both from 84-95, (4cyl non turbo) then that is correct the only thing you should have to change is the hole in the floor.


when the tranny in my 87 decided to quit i put in a trans from a 84. it was a g52 i think, but everything else was the same except the hole in the floor for the shifters. oh, the plastic shifter bezel is also different from the 2 trucks. one has the little coin tray by the radio, the other behind the t case shifter.

i actually prefer the g52. they came with a longer shifter then the w56.


the only difference in the t cases, pressuming they are both gear drive, is the shift rails. you can convert then to and from forward or top shift just by changing the shift rails.

if he's only charging you 100 i would get it all and keep it for spare parts or re sell to get some money back. he shouldnt charge you at all considering the part he sold you is no good.

Top shift and forward shift is irrelevant except which ever one matches your existing, but since it is a swap it doesn't matter. You are going to have to cut floor holes so it doesn't really matter as both are gear driven tcases.
