new to the board

A few weeks ago I let the fluid get too low in the clutch master cylinder. Had to drive about 50 miles before I could buy some and fill it back. had some really hard shifts and grinding to make it off the highway. filled it and bled and no problems with the clutch and shifting after that. Just started noticing a whine when accelerating in all gears except 4th. 4th is still silky smooth. would those few hard shifts damage it that quickly. I guess its going to be an inevitable rebuild but can I replace the fluid with something heavier? Synthetic? to prolong the inevitable. reccomendations on that? Looking for a donor trasmission but would like to get a few more months out of her before I tear it apart. Also, how difficult would replacing a leaky rear main while ive got it apart? thanks

 

I have the exact same problem and also trying to find a donor to rebuild. I don't think thicker fluid will help but you can try. Synthetic probably won't help as that's what I have in mine and it's so loud people look at me going down the street... It probably wasn't those few hard shifts that did up but just regular wear and tear.

It is easy to replace the rear main when you have the trans out.. You just have to pull the flywheel and use a seal puller.
