Anyone know if the VSV for the PAIR system from a '93 22re will work on an '88 22re? If they hook up, will the computer recognize the newer VSV? Will a VSV from a 90+ 3vze work on an '88 22re? I know you'll tell me to just go check for myself, but first of all, the 4runner is at my sisters house which is about 12 miles from me, second its dark and cold. Third, I would just like some input before I go and try. Thanks

My 91 has no electrical nor vacuum connections to the PAIR reed valve, so I'm confused.

 

Yes, the VSV for the PAIR valve. I'm looking at a vacuum diagram of both an '88 and '93 (well '92-'95) and they both have VSV's. I also have the VSV sitting next to me . In addition, the PO had it I/M'ed, it failed ONLY bceause the, and I quote, "Pulse Air injection not getting vacuum from the Vacuum Switching Valve"
The diagrams Im looking at (in Chiltons) say two things. they seem to call the PAIR (reed?) valve "AS reed valve" for the '88. Is that different than a PAIR reed valve? Its in the same spot, and they dont say PAIR anywhere.Then, in the manual for the 89+, the '91 diagram says "AS reed Valve" (Fed and Can). the Cali '91-95 call in the AS Reed Valve as well, but the '92-'95 Fed and Canada diagram calls it a PAIR Valve. There are vacuum lines coming off the "AS Reed Valve" and "PAIR Valve" in all the diagrams.

 

well, I may be wrong.
I just transplanted an 88 22r engine into my 91 22re truck a few weeks ago and didn't have any vacuum lines to the reed valve assembly.

 

According to Chiltons, the '88 Cali 22r had EACV, Electronic Air Control Valve. Not vacuum.

Lol. Not at all. I have no need to know about a 22r Only do it if it's going to bug you until you know for sure Theres a paragraph about the EACV in Chiltons, along with it being named in the vacuum diagram.

 

You may be right Abe. AS valve stands for "Air Switching Valve". Im so confusedddddddd. It says the EACV was used on '83+. What the electric is for though, I think, is for switching the VSV. The VSV I have sitting here, I had to unplug 2 vacuum hoses and an electronic plug.
Im so confused. Im mixed up, I think. These diagrams are confusing.

No worries what so ever. It looks like the EACV was on Cali 22rs '85-'87, '84 22r and 22re had a belt driven pump,'85-'87 Fed/Can 22rs had just an ASV, '88 22r Fed/Can had a belt driven pump again, and '88 22res had vacuum. I cant comment about the '85-'87 22res because the diagram doesnt even show them........

Am I confusing the PAIR valve thingy with the ASV/EACV?....They seem to be the same thing.

 

I just compared the VSVs--'88 and '93-- they look exactly the same. I didnt plug it in because it was dark and didnt feel like fiddling with the plug in the dark and cold. They are just in different housings, though...

 

sort of makes sense... '84 used the 'air pump' and diverter valves to deliver air into the exhaust.... later used the PAIR system which relies on the venturi effect to introduce air into the exhaust and did away with the need for a pump ... still though... I'm lost on the VSV.

I'm going to feel stupid if this is the fuel pressure regulator VSV. After looking through 4Crawlers images, and looking at this pic of my 22re, they are ALMOST in the same spot, a little different looking themselves, too...

According to Chiltons, one of the vacuum lines connect to the AS Reed Valve. In the diagram, the two VSVs on top are switched around.

Isn't you're '88 a Cali truck? I thought this one was, but its orignally from Virginia I think..I'd have to find the sales receipt again. It was registered in Cali for like 8 years.

See the red VSV towards the upper right of the pic (on the VC)? Is that not the PAIR reed valve VSV?
