I am knee deep in a timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets, major tune up on my 94 pickup (3vze). I purchased a vibration damper / harmonic balance remover, but the threads of the supplied bolts are not correct.

Does anyone know the thread size of the pulley bolts in the vibration damper?

Also if anyone has any tips on timing belt replacement, (this is my first one on this truck) please feel free to chime in.

Are you following a manual of any kind? In the Haynes manual, there are specs for bolt sizes in the front of the book.

There are numerous threads on timing belt replacement. Use my username in your search and you should find quite a bit of info. Not only by me, but many others who have done it. It's fairly straight forward if you're following a manual. But, the FSM is what I refer to as do most others. That is until you already know how to do it.

thanks for the link, I am using a Haynes manual, but the FSM is much better. I have the FSM on the drivetrain and electrical but not on the engine.
Is the whole engine FSM available on the web?

thanks , I took a trip to the hardware store this morning and got it all figured out.

On a different note...
Does anyone have an easy solution for a cam gear holder (as shown in the FSM)?
Do I even really need one? I can probably get them off with an impact, but it would definately help to have a holder.

If all else fails I will have to break out the MIG welder and make one.

 

I don't know if you have a place like Princess Auto where you are but that's where I got mine. Any cheap tool place should have it. Mine was about $10 but I bought cheap since it's a tool I'll only use a couple of times. Don't waste your time trying to make it, it's so much easier if you have the right tool.

Does anyone have any reccomendations as to what else I should change while doing my t belt job? I am replacing tbelt, water pump, thermostat, front main seal.
Is it reccomended to change the tensioner or idlers?
I have already thrown about 200 at this job and would like to keep it as cheap as possible but I don't want to be doing it again in 6 months.
Please reply with any reccomendations.

I have already changed the crank seal, and am currently debating on doing the cam seals it would be a no brainer but I did not have to pull the cams to remove the timing belt, so if i can get it back on with no problems I will most likely not change the cam seals. too little time and money.
