V6 vs 4 cyl.

Hey all

I have a 4 cyl Toyota p/u and love it. I am currently looking to sell my truck and buy a 4 runner. I am thinking about a V6. Are they as solid an engine as the 4 cyl.

I wont buy a 3.0 again either.. It's a solid motor.. not quite as solid as the 22re, but still reliable.

I won't buy another 3.0 again either. It's been a great engine for me and has gotten me from point A to B without problem since I got it, but it's so damn underpowered it just isn't funny. Why do you want to get rid of your truck? Where are you located anyways? (might be interested).

The head gasket on my Parents 3vz just went out, at 130K. I'll never buy one that I intend on keeping.

I am located in western MA. I am want to get rid of my truck for a few reasons. Currently it is registered in ME, and I am almost positive it won't pass in MA. The sunroof leaks a little bit, and there is a piece in the front of the frame that connects the left and right that has some pretty serious rust. I have also always wanted a pre 90 4 runner and have entered a financial situation where I can buy one. if you want more pics I can send them to you.

I wouldn't buy another 3.0, and if/when it goes, a 3.4 is going in - not spending a dime on it (other than regular maintenance)

i loved my 22re. now i'm driving on a 3vze and i love it. it's just got that bigger feeling that i like. so far it's proving reliable, yet dificult to work on! (fill the engine bay).

That is one of my favorite things about the 22RE. It doesn't get much simpler, unless it was a 22R.

the 3VZ (3.0) CAN be a solid motor, but people like to fault it, it definitely has its fair share of problems, I would recomend a 22RE or 5VZFE (3.4) motor. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I love my 22re, sit on the fender and get to work. I have never seen such a clusterfudge of vacuum lines and such. And the spark plugs can be difficult to change, if its hot.

people give the 3.0 a really bad rap and its not that bad. i like my truck. i dont really think its that slow. granted its hard to get up hills in the sierras sometimes and it was a great feat to get past a big truck pulling a 5th wheel but i sitll love my truck.

i didnt buy a 4wheel drive 4runner to go race my friends that have 5.0 mustangs. it gets me there in just the right amout of time, cuz you know how it always is, you catch up to them at the next light and your back to the start.

i can still get sideways in my truck (when it rains) and i can spin my tires (in mud and when it rains)

i'm on the "never another 3.0" bandwagon. 3.4 or 4cyl but never another 3.0.

edit: and it's not the slow thing either. it's a pretty good engine, but I can do more with a 4cyl, or a 5vz. and 4cyls allow me to fit my mitts down in the engine compartment, whereas i bust my knuckles every time on the 3.0 just changing spark plugs

heres what it comes down to:

as you could assume, the v6 is faster than the 4 banger. so before you listen to all these people calling it the '3.slow' and talking about how hard it is to get it over hills, imagine how much worse that will be in a 115 hp 22re. sure, its easier to work on, and sure, it will probably last longer. but the 3.0 takes the cake in power and torque

and it should be mentioned, that toyotas new(er) 2.7 liter DOHC 4 banger, the one they use on the 4x tacomas, has about the same horsepower and torque numbers as the old 3.0 v6, but while retaining the gas milage and hopefully some of the simplicity of the 22re. and im sure anyone with a newer tacoma can vouch for you - they will go past 200k easy. i think this is probably as good as a toyota motor gets. of all the engines available for a swap, i think for me it would come down to either a toyota 2.7 tacoma engine, or a newer 3.4 v6, or a chevy 4.3

The new issue of 4WD Toyota Owner has a nice piece in it (the 3.0 engine) on the 3.4 swap into the 2nd gen 4Runner.

I do not miss mine.
I liked my 22RE better that was in my '90 Xtracab over my 3.0 in the '91 4Runner.
