V6 Diff Swap - What do I do with this?

Picked up some 4.88 Diffs and I am preparing to swap them in. The rear is a V6 4.88 Diff from a 90's Toy, there is a sensor of some type and wiring at the top of te Diff as you can see in the pic. What do I do with this to swap into my 1st gen 4runner. Pull it and cap it? or leave it as it has no use. See pic:

Looks like an ABS sensor to me. Either cut the wire flush with the sensor, or make a block-off plate for it.

Not all V6 trucks have ABS, though. I've got a V6 third w/ a tru trac and I don't have that.

Marlin Crawler offers a plug to seal up the hole. Or you can just cut the wire off.

Just a hint....before installing that fine 488....why not snug up the carrier bearings just a tad. Tighten each wheel 1 or 2 notches(an equal number on both sides). It will not strain those old well-worn bearings and it will add some strength. You will find they will likely turn easy indicating the need for just that. New bearings---we could tighten the hell out of the carrier bearings...but not old from my experiences.

Anybody else looking for one of those 488 factory 3rds...I have 1 in the shop looking for a good home.....it's a non-ABS so it has no hole. 150 plus shipping to your zip. It's clean and has a decent pattern...teeth are in good shape...came off a 1992 Pick-up V6 auto. As a matter of fact, came off this install....

I will soon be adding it to the for sale board.

Hey, just figured I'd ask here instead of starting a new topic.

I have a 1990 22re 4x4, I wanna get 4.88 or something out of a V6 4runner. If it has the V6 rear 8" can I use it in my 4 cyl rear/front? Do the third members on these swap straight across or do I need to swap the whole axles?

What if my rig has are ABS, and the 3rd does too? Can I just wire it back up again, or what?

yes, the factory 4.88s will be V6 version and it will swap directly into your 4cyl axle housing without any mods. the pre-tacoma rear diffs are all interchangeable.

for anyone swapping their rear diff, you should fork out the $ and put a locker in there before installing. no sense in taking it apart again and paying for gear oil twice since you're gonna eventually want a locker anyways - lockrite's are less than $250.

Yea I figure I'll do that too when I get my hands on a set of diffs. I'd put in an Aussie I think.

Highonpottery, how do you like driving with 31's and 4.88's? Pretty peppy? How's your mileage?

31s and 4.88s is definitely more peppy than 31s with 4.10s. i'm very happy with the ratio of gears vs tire size right now, but i can't wait to toss some bigger tires under there. i can pass people in 5th gear in a relatively timely manner now. on the street i could probably chirp it in 2nd now. for a DD with an empty rig all the time it's probably not the best combo, but if you've got weight in the back or tow or just do city driving/offroading all the time you'll love the combo.

i honestly have not yet calculated my gas mileage as i haven't been driving the truck much for the past 6months, maybe 4 tanks total. i haven't even calculated to see exactly how much my speedo/odometer is off but i'm guessing it's off by around 10-12%. when i'm doing 70mph (speedo) i'm actually doing around 78mph - according to another vehicle i was traveling with. at 70mph (speedo), my RPMs are roughly 3400rpms. i used to get around 16-21mpg (best i ever got was 26!) and now i'd guess it's slightly less partially because i gun it everywhere now - but then again since it now has slightly more power as it's in the powerband, the ole 22re could be working less and getting better fuel economy.

i plan on bumping up to 33s before summertime, so then i'd be back to stock. after i wear out my 33s, i'm gonna do some mods and try running 35s with the 4.88s in the hopes that it will feel like my 31/4.10 combo did - it wasn't THAT bad; i'd also hope to have dual cases by then so i can get my torque back when on the trail.
