Turbo concerns
Im looking to turbo my 1989 22r but im not sure how well it would hold up. I know some models came factory with one but im concerned it might blow the engine or the transmission out. Anyone with experience doing this? Only looking to make about 300 hp

You're going to have a really rough time getting 300hp out of a built 22r/re. Stock the rte only had 135hp. I would guess that mine with a larger T3 tubro and intercooler is only making around 150. I think guys start really having reliability issues up and around 200.
That being said, I would think a turbo 3rz should be able to make that.

I have posted this link a few times, https://people.well.com/user/mosk/
very good read, old but you’ll get the reason very few do this to a 22r.
I’ll be honest, I wanted to do this when I got my truck in 2011, I have left it alone…..
it’s just not the platform for big power and 300 with this motor is considered big power

The most substantial answers are gearing, engine swap, weight reduction. If you want to stick with the 22R engine, header/exhaust, camshaft, weber carb swap.
People on YouTube have also been installing the holly sniper systems on alot of different carbureted vehicles with success. There is a few 22Rs on there with it done
