troubleshooting?

88 p/u 3vze 5spd
having one issue after another.. long n short of it im trying to figure out how to check the trouble codes.. in my manual it says to use a jump wire from two connectors in the lil diagnosis box near the fuse box and count the check engine light flashes.. however there is no check engine light when i turn the key to the ON position and certainly isnt one when i have the jumper (paperclip) set up accordingly... ???

i dont get it plz help

Sounds like the bulb is burnt out, or isn't lighting for some other reason. It should come on when the key is 'ON', with engine off, that lets you know it is working. (Or not working in this case.)
