Hey guys!
I have an 88 4R with a 3.0 and auto. I am having issues with OD not engaging. All other gears shift perfectly.

I researched and found that you can disconnect a plug and do a "manual shift" test to confirm it is a solenoid issue. You are supposed to road test after you remove the solenoid wire connector.
In my searches I have seen multiply images and they all look different.

Can someone please tell me exactly where this connector is? There are multiple connectors on the drivers side of the trans. I have seen pix of the tranny and some of the engine compartment so I really dont know where the connector is that I am supposed to disconnect to do the road test.
The more basic you can instruct me the better. (if you can post a pix even better)

Not to be a jerk but please please please do not tell me about the temp sensor, t-stat or anything else under the hood. ALL parts under the hood that could effect this have been replaced and checked out fine.

Im not familiar with Toyota autos, but am familiar with domestic autos. A few ideas would be the TCC switch/solenoid (torque converter control). Also if the detent or kick down is cable operated might want to reset its adjustment.

Thanks for the info. I am pretty confident that the solenoid is bad but to confirm I need to pull the connector and shift manually thru the gears into OD to confirm it is a bad solenoid. But I dont know where the plug connector is located that I am supposed to disconnect to perform the test.

Thanks to Justin I got my answer! I disconnected the ECU for the tranny and manually shifted. OT worked fine.
Now I know what I am doing this weekend, changing a few solenoids!
