Transmission and Speedometer problems with a 92 Runner

On Tuesday, I bought a 92 4Runner, 3.0L engine, 4WD, for around $1100. Thought I was stealing.
Think I should think again.
It has trouble going into drive. The shifter moves fine, but sometimes it seems as if it is only half in drive, or just barely. Reverse is strong, I could go anywhere in this thing....backwards. And if I get it in drive, it probably isn't staying. It will start off fine, then the next time I take my foot off the accelerator, go back to a weak sort of drive. I have to practically floor it to get it to roll slowly. Checked the transmission fluid, it looks a little murky, but isn't bubbling and doesn't smell burnt.
And the speedometer/odometer doesn't work. Wondering if this is connected to the above problem.
A/C's a little weak.
Other than that this thing is great. Would love to get it into shape so, I can drive it without almost dying after every stop light.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to yotatech! I don't know much about your tranny problem, but there has been alot of info on the speedo cable and the speed sensor. I believe you probably have a cable and not an electric speedo, but you have to check on that. A bad speed sensor can mess with the tranny, but I don't know if it would mess with it that bad. Try a search with steve and speed sensor and I think it will pull up some info. The sensor is on the pass. side of the transfer case. You should be able to tell if it is an electric connection or a speedo cable. Good luck

well not sure bout the tranny stuff. maybe check the physical shifter connections to the tranny?
as for the speedo/odo, i had that problem as well. there's a plastic gear that connects at the end of the tranny which measures your speed/odo. when that gear gets fried, your speedo stops working. i would check out a service manual and see if you can find that part and then stop by the dealer and pick it up. you might be able to get it elsewhere but i sorta doubt it. pretty cheap part and i wish i had put it in myself cause it looked pretty easy. (well w/e got to drive the loner 2005 taco trd and that was fun)

Yes replace it yourself, took less than 5 min. Also, the stealership was actually way cheaper than the price that autozone gave me for that part. I would still check though.

I guess it's an auto tranny, sounds like the shift linkage needs adjusting. Does the truck have a body lift on it by chance? The murky ATF sounds kind of bad though.

I can e-mail you some pics of the speedo sender location and types if you PM me your address. I just took some pics for Marlin Crawler to help me with mine.

sounds just like my tranny. try manually shifting from L, 2, to D. if this works or helps it's probably your shift solenoids. mine won't downshift and when i come to a stop and take off i am in third unless i manually downshift. you can also pull the codes from the ect. there is a diasnostic terminal that you ground and it will flash the overdrive light showing your codes with the number of blinks. sounds like your spedo cable is broke which will effect your number one speed sensor and can cause problems also. try pulling the codes. use the 93 fsm link on here(search for 93 fsm) and use the auto tranny section to figure out how to pull the codes.
