Transmission Problems

92 A/T 160k

Problem: Truck will move very slowly in drive and reverse at high rms. The problem arose after I tried washing the underside the truck to clean mud & oil off. It seems to engage but there is just no power getting to the wheels.

What I've done: I've gone through the FSM and have not come up with anything more than "faulty transmission". I dropped the a/t oil pan, replaced the filter, topped of the transfer case oil. I've checked about every electrical connection I can think of.

Any ideas before I take it down to Tanner Transmission and pay an arm and a leg to have them look at it?

You didn't say you checked the transmission fluid. You did check that, right?

Did you already check if the parking brake is engaged or stuck?

If there are any electrical connections related to the transmission, unplug them and inspect everything.

I did check the fluid levels 4 or 5 times.

Update: I was shifting between 2H,4h & 4L this is what I got;
2H no power,
4H no power
4L ah I have power forward and reverse.

Any ideas why I have no power in 2H or 4H?

Update on problems

After limping down to a trusted transmission shop here is what happened. The shop owner took a test dive with me and wouldn't you know it as soon as he got in 2H and 4H started working. He check the fluids and they are fine. We hooked up a diagnostic tools to read the codes that came up. In the test dive he noted that it was not shifting properly. Came up with codes 62, 63, 64, 65. He said that I should first replace the ECU as it seems be spitting out what appear to be false codes. I ordered a new ECU off e-bay for $60. Matched the part number.

Other info:

It was over heating because the torque converter will not lock up if the transmission is throwing out codes.

If you pull the cover off the ECU you can find what chip is overheating by the sicker being burned off. Stick a heatsink from Circuit City on it. I pulled mine off and did not see any damage due to heat.

Problem Solved

A new ECU from ebay fixed the problems.
