Went to leave the house this morning and there is a puddle of fluid under the truck. Turns out the t-case didn't like my 300 mile run to the lake this weekend and has decided to start leaking. I think it's the top shifter seal since the top of the t-case is wet and you can see where it ran down the sides to the bottom. From what I've read there are something like 4 seals.

1) Input shaft
2) Shifter seal
3) Output shaft
4) Rear driveshaft.

Is that right?

Ok my real question is if something like resealing the t-case (with all 4 seals) is something that can be done in a couple of hours. This is my only vehicle and I'm sure I can limp it along until Saturday and then do the reseal at that time.

I would imagine they can be done in a couple hours. If you've never removed the driveshafts, spray them down with some PB Blaster a day or two before doing the job. It makes a huge difference! When I did the 4.7 gears, I sprayed the rear driveshaft bolts a day before, but forgot to spray the front. It took so much more work to get the front off!!

 

Thanks for the reply. I recently had both shafts off when I did the clutch so I think they'll be easy to remove. Do you know if it's ok to use brake clean on a t-case to get all the grime and crap off? I'd like to get it cleaned up and see if I can track down which seal it is, I'm sort of hoping I'll get lucky and it'll be one of the easy ones.

I'm a little ticked since I had hoped to order some parts this week and now I have to fix something instead.

Ricky, Last week when I washed the taco I sprayed some of the tire degreaser on transfer case and when I was done I pressure washed it.
Its not the best but it did the job.

Idk about brake clean but if you dont want to go to the car wash I would just grab some engine degreaser..

 

Filled it lately? Perhaps you overfilled it if it is blowing out the top. Use Toyota gaskets only and Red Toyota FIPG on a tcase.

Toyota tcases are pretty easy to work on so find the leak and fix it yourself. 4.7 gear install instructions show them pretty well via tear down and rebuild.

Best time to clean them is when they are out and tearing them down. Right now I would get some Purple power and a pressure washer.

I used brake cleaner and a pressure washer, but then ran out of brake cleaner so used Purple Power. Both did an ok job of penetrating the grease, but the pressure washer was the main thing that got the grease out.

If you're replacing the seals, you might as well install 4.7 gears. All the seals come with the TG kit

 

If you've had the shifter off lately, I bet that's where it's leaking from. Gotta seal that thing GOOD. The little splash shield thingie is not a gasket - oil will still be slung out of there!

 

OK I pulled the bottom half of the Budbuilt plate and there is freaking gear oil everywhere. I'm planning on driving to work tomorrow on just the crossmember and will hit the car wash on the way home. I cleaned it up with a few rags and it really looks like it's coming out of the top near where the shifter plate bolts in. I haven't overfilled it and so far I have no strange noises.

I had that thing off twice in the last few months. Once for the shifter seats and again for the clutch job. It was dry the first time and slimmy the second time. I'm guessing that's the issue? If so can I use some RTV to seal it??

 

Yep - I used RTV on mine. NOTE: you need to RTV the splash plate to the shifter on top and then to the tcase on bottom. I couldn't believe how much that oil must get slung around and how tight it had to be sealed!

Arnt the shifters vented through the top? Perhaps they got clogged??

I did the front output seal on mine last year, super easy...
