transfer case CF loose

Hey guys. Ive been trying to find the source of a slight vibration in my 93 22re 5spd 4x4. Truck has new tires and runs really good. Upon greasing the u joints I noticed there is some play at the transfer case companion flange. It seems to be the flange which is loose rather than the u joint. What to do about this?? Its hard to tell from the video. Towards then end its better. But I can feel and see movement.

They loosen up over time and miles.

Here is a thread that deals with this:

can you be specific about the nature of the play you are seeing? is it rotational slop, or side-to-side slop? the video is useless, trying testing it by grabbing the u-joint, not past the slip joint.

The play was at the flange. I tightened up the 30mm nut with a breaker bar. The nut turned only a small amount. But this removed most of the play. Now there is only a very small click. The vibration I was experiencing seems gone.

hopefully this will work another few years. I'd like to avoid a transfer case rebuild.

thx for posting how it worked, sounds like what millball has been describing.

what i also did was compare the free play to how much free play there was the front transfer case output.
