Tranny/Transfercase problems

howdy all, im not quite sure whats going on and i probaly need to take my 4rnr to a tranny shop, but i figured id ask around here first. so yeah heres the deal, in H2 the truck drives great no prob. but when i get into L4 i wont even pull itself up a hill, offroad that is. ive got 4.88s and 33s, so i know thats not my problem, also tranny fluid is good, i just adjusted my tps yesterday and the truck is making alot more power, but still no fix to my prob. could my torque converter be shot, or mabye t-case problems. just curious if anyone else has had a problem w/ the auto tranny and chain driven t-case. any help is greatly appriciated...thanx!

lol, the 3slow and the stock t-case gearing doesn't have enough upmh to pull itself up a hill dude, especially with 33" tires.

If the torque converter was fubar'd, you would have problems driving no matter what.

I think you're fine, you're just thinking that your gearing is lower than it is. With 33" tires, you really need 5.29s. Even with my 5.29's and 31" tires, it won't crawl itself up a hill in 4low with my rig.

I guess it depends on how steep the hill is. A couple years ago I was stuck on this hill in 4low with 33's and 5.29 gearing just from lack of power or gearing. The thin air at about 11,500 ft didn't help the power much either.

It was after that I decided to get dual cases and more power.

you gotta remember a 4runner is a bit heavier than a truck too.

He must have a 5 speed huh?

A340H auto 1st gear: 2.804:1
W56 5-speed 1st gear: 3.954:1

I may have a similar problem on an almost identical truck.

Read this thread...

http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.ph...6&topic=1044.0

Maybe you should take your rear driveshaft off and see if you can move. Mine will barely move in 4hi, and will not move at all in 4lo. The driveshaft has full torque.

Not sure if this is what you are dealing with, but I thought I would throw it out there before you spend a ton of money on your transmission.

no he doesnt have a 5 speed, im not some kind of dedede. he has the exact setup i do, but with 4.10 i wouldnt compare the two if his was. i mean come on...

the thing is that even if my rearend was getting all the torque it should still be turning the tires over at 2000 rpm in 4L. the hill that i test on is not that steep, just long, with alittle ledge at the top, but i dont even get to it unless i am using momentum. when i first started wheeling the truck after all the sas and rear swap mods it had 37s on it and it pulled like a champ. anywhere i wanted to go i went. its just started to act up on me, this is why i went to the 33s, thinking that would help. but no its still weak. like my tc is shot, my dads 06 z71 blew the tc but it still drove down the road just fine till chevy fixed it(free of charge...sweet). only under strain did it not work. this is killing me, im going to the jamboree in a month or so, already have a cabin and paid addmission, gotta get this thing fixed. thanks for the idea marc ill go ahead and do it anyway, might find another prob. will repost after noon or so and let you know. thanx again fellas!

I said that not because I thought you were a dedede (what ever that is), but because he has 4.10 gearing, I never heard of an auto with 4.10 gearing. Good luck with your problem,

The chain drive cases have the lowest stock 4low gears, VF1A and VF2A have 2:57, A340H has 2:66. I have a 5spd(R150), the VF1A and 4:30 gears(swapped from an auto) with 35" tires. I have never felt the need for any more torque in 4L. I can start in 2nd gear even on a steep grade. My V6 is a strong runner which helps.

If you've got that integral A340H unit, I have no knowledge of it's design, sorry. If you have a VF1A I have rebuilt mine, completely. Fully disassembled, cleaned, replaced all bearings and seals. So I got ya covered there.

It sounds to me your transmission, maybe the torque converter or the friction disks(clutches). I can't imagine a way your transfer case could do anything like your sayin', but I don't know what's up with the A340H. Is there any sigificant difference between 4H and 4L?

well thats the thing, i really cant tell any big signifcant difference...i guess there should be though huh? also when i first had the truck out wheeling on 37s it pulled great. nothin stopped it. i was going up a pretty steep and way off camber hill and i heard a loud metal ping. my momentum stopped and the truck just sat there turning over at about 2000 rpm not breaking the tires loose. i took it over to a toyota specialist today, they say its my t-case and that i have somehow broken a piece internally that engages the low gear. i have a spare tranny and t-case with only 12000 miles on it so this weekend ill be busy...im not sure which model t-case i have(vf1a, vf2a)but it is mated to auto tranny.

Are you sure that the tcase is getting in low? I must have smacked the linkage on mine a while back and afterwards the tcase wouldn't go into low. Before I readjusted the linkage I had to crawl under the truck any push the lever on the side of the tcase forward into low.

ya the t-case isnt engaging 4low, i even went out and bought a whole new linkage kit and had yota install it and set it up properly, thinking that maybe i wasnt adjusting the links properly, still no good. i have tried to push it in manually, the bracket/lever on the case is in the 4low position, but internally its not engaging. i will know this weekend when i swap in my other one.

I know what piece had to have gone then, it would be difficult to explain. There's a ring that's guided by the 4L shifter rail fork that meshes 4H to 4L, it's either been spat out of the fork or is cracked, probably into pieces. Could also have snapped one of the prongs off the fork, or both.

let us know how the swap goes and if that fixes your problem. i dont care what kinda engine it is, with 4.88s you should be able to crawl up a hill in low for sure

Do you have any idea what vehicle your spare tranny and tcase came out of? Just curious. Hope the swap goes well!

This I don't understand. My 4runner won't crawl up hills here in FL in 4lo with my 5.29's and 31's.........and my rig is engaging 4lo, I can gently gas it and then it'll crawl with a lil gas, but sure won't do it on it's own.

what i am saying is that even at full throttle mine wont go anywhere. if all you have to do is feather your pedal to keep your truck moving then your doing fine. ur not going to be able to just put it in gear/drive and the truck crawl under its own power unless your dual cased or low t-case gear kit...up a hill that is. heres the hill that i get about half way up and stop...btw this is my brothers 88, he able to just crawl up it at about 1900 rpm 33s and stock gearing
