tranny input shaft question

The transmission in question is a W56-B from an '87 4Runner.

I'm in the middle of doing a clutch job, and decided to clean up the transmission. I noticed that I was able to move the input shaft a bit. In and out, and up and down. Not much, but just enough to make me question it. How normal is this? I would guess it shouldn't be doing that... and with 190K miles on it, it doesn't surprise me.

Before I removed the transmission, everything shifted good and it drove just fine...except for the slipping clutch and a bad throw out bearing.

Also, had it tipped to the side a bit while spraying it down, and noticed a bit of fluid dripping from the tip of the input shaft. Never did that before. I'm guessing the input shaft seal is shot?

Confirmed your input shaft seal has failed.

if i remember right, you just remove the bolts hold the input shaft housing on and replace the seal.. notice the depth of the seal.

just unbolt the housing and repalace the seal. you will have to use some sealnt to reseal the housing.

as far as the play, percievable play is OK if it was really excessive then you should have had some noise issues, problems in the front bearings usually cause a whining/whirring noise that increases in pitch as you progress through first to third gears and diminshes in forth gear.
