Trailer wiring?

Guys,

This is a '90 Runner with 3.0L, 4x4, and the towing package. I've tested output at the 4-pin trailer connector, and when the brakes are applied, I get 12 volts to the right trailer light, but only 6 volts to the left. This is being measured right at the 4-pin connector coming off of the truck. Any ideas what's going on? Why only 6 volts to the left light?

When did they start using those modules that I've been reading about that converge 5 signals from the truck into 4 signals to go into the 4-pin trailer connector, and which tend to fail?

Thanks for any tips or pointers.

Jordan

That is interesting have you checked at your brake light pin on the tail light.

I would bet is that stupid box.

I never used a 4 pin flat plug I always wire my own 6 pin plugs.

I haven't checked the voltage at the brake light yet, just at the trailer connector. If the box is cooked, is there an upgrade mod for this, so I don't have to replace it with another error-prone OEM module?

I actually have a 7-pin plug that I wired into my trailer, but the connector coming out of the truck was a 4-pin. Should I just yank the module altogether and take the 5 wires directly back to my 7-pin connector?

I have seen other converter boxes around can`t really say if they are better or worse.

If you decide to wire direct to your 7 pin plug (forgive my typo 6pin plug)

Take your time solder and heat shrink with water proof heat shrink.

Other wise it will be a big mess I fix so many poor connections with people having trailer light issues .

Only you can decide which way will work for you.

In any case good luck
