Should be Dexron type, brand not terribly important. DexMerc type may be acceptible as well but I'd recommend using the more well known name brands like Castrol, etc., and not the cheaper / generic / store branded type.

Just did some googling and it seems the type T-IV is backwards compatible with Dexron III, but not the other way around.
There's a long-winded discussion on bobistheoilguy: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...rt=all&gonew=1
where one person shows a chart of corolla's, transmission model and fluid, and in 2003 the transmission was the same model as the 2002 but the fluid spec changed from DIII to T-IV, which supports the backwards-compatible assertation. Allegedly something to do with the partial lockup converters or something or other.
Anyhow, I got tired after 3 pages of the same sort of arguments and cross-referencing dino to synth formula and vendors and auto makers and .
I know my 91 2wd takes Dexron III or higher. But not sure I'd try the T-IV.
