Top end knock

I have an 87 22r pickup 2wd. The other day when I got on the gas it started knocking at a higher rpm so a friends suggested adjusting the valves so we did. After that it's been a constant knock with a lack of power. The knock kinda makes it sound like a Diesel engine. Any ideas?

What specs did you use when you adjusted the valves?

Compression test?
It could be a rod knock. Does it sound like its detonating from the timing being off / bad gas or a metal on metal knock?
