Hey guys,

Im am putting to gather a re built 22re short block and have a question on top dead center. Just fyi i am timing stupid..

I want to get my motor at TDC before i put my head on. Ive read the book and couldnt find anything to tell me what to look for referance with a bare bottom end. My question is with the timing marks.. Right now my crank case timing mark is down and my #1 piston is also down. I have a feeling i am not at TDC. Do i need to rotate 360, does my #1 piston need to be at the top of its stroke?

Throw me your great wisdom as to im putting to gather a block that i got in thousands of little pieces

honestly, it's not necessary to be at TDC until you go to put the timing chain on then aligning the sprockets and chain will have you turning things to TDC.

 

No, not necessary, but for your own SAG's, yes....the piston should be at the top of it's stroke just before it's starts it's downward travel.

 

TDC (Top Dead Center) of number one cylinder. Like abec said no need right now until the head is on. Just bring number one piston to the top of its stroke. That way you don't have to go far when you do want to find it.

 

something I forgot... the 22r/re is an interference engine (meaning the pistons can hit the valves), so maybe it would be a good idea to bring #1 to top dead center (or at least as close as possible) before installing the head... you don't have to be at TDC, just make sure that as you're turning the crankshaft clockwise that the #1 piston is moving upwards and is at least 1/2 way up. And also turn the cam so #1 valves are loose before installing the head.
