Tire size ?
Its about time to get new rubber for my '91 runner. It currently has 235/75 R 15's (stock for my runner) I am considering going to 31's. What I'd like to know is if the 31's as a spare will fit under my vehicle where the original 235 fit. I hadn't given this any thought untill a couple of days ago. My son just picked up a nice '95 that came with the larger tire option, and the spare tire carrier set up is slightly different than mine. Anyone with experience on this issue?

Yes, 31x10.50" tires were available stock on your truck. You can fit them with no issues, heck you could even go up to a 33x10.50" tire if you want.
Keep in mind, with the increased tire size your truck will be slower. These trucks are underpowered and rely on proper differential gearing to stay bearable.

Yes, 31x10.50" tires were available stock on your truck. You can fit them with no issues, heck you could even go up to a 33x10.50" tire if you want.

A 31x10.5r15 spare will fit underneath, but NOT with the tow hitch attached.

with a 235/75r15, you are at approximately 28.5"-29". A 31" tire should work fine for you. A 31" tire should fit in the spare tire carrier under the bed without much hassle. Other than that, you may notice some loss of acceleration and some hills you may drive might require downshifting sooner than you're used to.

Thanks for the replies! I am concerned about a potential loss in power. In all honesty, the 235's have done well for me. My off-road experience is limited to hunting season, and mostly on existing two tracks etc. Snow is usually the biggest issue, and I know from experience that narrower tires work better for that. The 31's have a coolness factor, but at my age, praticality usually wins out. I get good milage with what I have now, averaging 22mpg or so, with the occasional tankful getting 24.5+. I guess that is a little more important to me than good looks. Plus, if I go 31's, I'll be buying 5 tires instead of 4. Just doesn't make too much sense, I guess, given my application.
