Biggest I've ever seen stock was 32x11.50. That is with the torsion bars cranked up. You may be able to do a narrow 33", but I've never seen it. As far as off road aggression, I've never had a better tire than a Swamper TSL. I'm talking mud here, not rocks and sand.

I've always run BFG All Terrain T/As in 31x10.5.

I've found them to be a good all around tire, and they don't squat too much when I'm loading green fire wood. I've done some local and Moab wheeling with them (nothing real tough), and they perform pretty well on the abundance of white stuff around here, too.

I just got some Goodyear Wrangler MT/R's - 31X10.5x15 for my 89 4Runner and I LOVE them!

I wouldn't go any bigger without some kind of lift. When I'm off roading, they almost rub. If I would have gotten the 32X10.5's I definately would have some rubbing when the axles are articulated.

I believe that tc on here runs 33 10.50 Dunlop Rovers without a lift. Not sure if he put a small lift on or if he also had to flatten the fender seam.

The biggest tire rated for a stock 4runner is 31 10.50. That assumes stock wheels with the stock wheel backspacing. I suppose you could play around with wheel width, backspacing, and tire brands / sizes to fit slightly larger -- if you wanted to take the time.

I'm running 31 x 10.50 Michelin LTX M/S tires on stock alloy rims. Tires are GREAT in snow,, average in mud and they wear forever.

I second the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs 31x10.5s. For me personally, they're kind of pricey, but I know they're well worth the money.

Yep - 33x10.50 on stock rims with no lift (no torsion bar crank, no fender manipulation, nothing except fix the saggy butt) and no rubbing on my 2nd gen. Wouldn't think you would have a problem on the first gen (4crawler runs this size too, but I'm sure he has lift)

I think they look great. Some pix here www.4wheelingoh.shuuterfly.com/action. The gold Taco has 33x10.50 BFG A/T and the black Taco has 34x10.50 SuperSwampers.

ONLY problem with this size is lack of choices. BFG A/T and M/T, Dunlop Radial Rover RVXT, and Super Swamper are about it.

Although you asked what the bigegst you could get was - I think Interco makes tires up to 49". Will need a lot fo lift for those! LMAO

Biggest I've seen on a 4Runner are the 40's on 4Mogger here.

I had 31x12.50x15 on my stock 1989 before I lifted it. After a 4" susp. lift & 3" body lift, I was able to fit a set a TSL SSR's in 33x14.50x15 very nicely. Backspacing was 4 if I remember right. The stock V-6/gears turned them without too much problem. Heres a pic of my old 1989 with the lift/tires.

1985 4Runner 355 chevy, 11" lift, 39.5x18x15 Boggers.

If you want to see what it would look like on 40's here is one of my 1985 4runner on 39.5x18x15 Boggers. I have a thread with a few more in the 84-85 4runner section.

When I ordered my tires for my 89, I got a great deal buying a package rims/tires from 4wheelparts.com They were very good to deal with. Knew exactly which rim/tire would fit my truck with my lift. So it took all of the guesswork out for me. As far as the spacers or offset kits, I don't know. But the Super Swamper SSR's in 33x14.5x15 worked great offroad & great onroad. They were so wide that there was very little wear after 20k miles. Well worth the money in my opinion. In fact, I will prob get a set for on road use & save my boggers for the trail.
