So, i blew a head gasket in my 88 22re. i know that the head gasket is usually known for going out, and granted it has 168,000miles. so i have everything pulled off. but the only thing i havent be able to do is removing the timing chain gear. i know that you need to be very careful taking it off. but im not sure which way the thread patter is thinking that it would be would be self tightening. if anybody could respond with some tips, or ideals. or give me a discription on how to do it best. much appriciated. Are you talking about the big cam gear bolt? The bolt is threaded normal, counter-clock to release it. I made a jig with a long piece of steel and 2 bolts welded to it. In a bind, I have used a big screwdriver and jammed it in the holes...done it to other cars and it's been fine but HIGHLY not recommended. This is very bad practice. I wish the 22RE cam was cut so you can stick a big wrench in the shaft.
