thermostat install

I hate chilton manuals- 'note the position of the thermostat and reinstall in the same manner.'

Well the previous owner of my 22re was running it without one, so which side of the thermostat points up?

...and why can't the stupid manual just tell me?! it is after all, vehicle specific!

The spring should point down.

general rule of thumb is, the visable spring will face the engine, and the side that looks like a point will be facing the radiator hose leading to the radiator

That's what Ithught, but my manual says- generally the spring will face the housing. Housing sounds like it means manifold, but then I thought, "No, housing means thermostat housing,if it meant manifold it, it would say manifold."

But that was wrong, so I pulled it and flipped it. I hate non-specific instructions!

This is for a Surf, but the principle is the same for all.

The jiggle valve, (to use what seems to be the favourite term), always goes at the top too.

I hate these service manuals too(haynes, chiltons,fsm...I have them all)......definitely not newbie (me) friendly. Like 10 things happen between step 1 and step 2 and you have to be a certified mechanic to figure them out. But THAT right there is where YOTATECH comes in.

I've had my thermostat in and out several times (cuz, i'm dumb) and the above postings are what I did as well.
