Thermo Time Switch Part Numbers - 87 22RE - Need Help

I can’t find much information relating the different part numbers for thermo time switches.

In my 87 4Runner 22RE, I have an 89462-20050. I’ve read somewhere that 20050 replaced 20010 due to an issue with a long crank with 20010... I read that on another forum where I have no experience with the credibility. I ask for help on the history of the part numbers because, on my 4Runner, the plug into the switch itself is gone—replaced with two female ends for spade connectors. Turns out that didn’t hold the connection, so I’m going to put a plug back on. I can get one off eBay with a switch included, but my thermo time switch options are 20010 or 30011, not a 20050. Toyota part catalogs tell me that the 30011 is compatible with my 4Runner, but that 20010 is discontinued and that the 20050 is inconclusive for my vehicle (I used VIN lookup). I’d like to buy switch/plug combo to have a spare thermo time switch which will work in my 4Runner, and I guess the 30011 will, but I’m just curious as to the different part numbers.

Does anyone know the history of these switches?

The information you found is related to a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) about a Hard Crank or Extended Crank with a heat soak of 3-4 hours.

The Toyota parts catalog looks the same on my end too with inconclusive "fitment" of 89462–20050.

The TSB states that for 1985-1987 22R-E engines with the Hard Crank or Extended Crank with a heat soak of 3-4 hours problem, replace the Time Switch.

Previous Part Number: 89462–30011
New Part Number: 89462–20050

You currently have the "updated" part on your truck. It looks like you can use the original part number of 89462–30011. Not all trucks ran into this hard hot cranking problem, but the old part would be more likely to have it if this problem were to occur, just so you are aware.

That is very interesting, thanks for posting that Old87. I think I may have been having this hard start/long crank issue before I blocked the fuel line to my Cold Start Injector.

Old87, great information. Thank you for posting that. Sounds like the thing to do is get the 30011 plug/switch combo, and I’ll have some chance of it working on my 4Runner should the 20050 stop working. Thanks again... this is very helpful.
