and i see a significant difference in gas mileage when my front hubs are locked, and when they're not. (not in 4wd)

to check the ADD thing, put an ADD truck on a lift, or even just jack up the front, with the transfer case in 2wd, spin one tire, then spin the other. you WILL NOT feel the differential spin. now put it in 4wd, and the tranny in neutral, and spin it. don't take my word for it, check it for yourself.
I think this is answered above, but I'm going to take a shot at it, too. The sleeve is only on the driver's side front axle. Nothing keeps the passenger side from turning the spider gears. Now, that shouldn't translate into turning your front driveshaft, but the diff still turns.

I get 400-450 kms (250-280 miles) per tank with my hubs locked. And I get .... 400-450 kms per tank with them unlocked. The biggest difference I've noticed is that I drop mileage with winter gas and cold temps.

And for the record, I pulled my front hubs and replaced them with manual lockers and bypassed the ADD by running constant vacuum to the actuator.

^ ok, then the other descriptions that i read about how ADD worked were incorrect.

though, i had it partially correct in my head. i knew the whole differential/driveshaft wasn't spinning, but i didn't realize that the spider gears still spun. thanks for correcting me, as i despise bad info!
