Surging/running rough 22re
Hey all! Stoked to be back! It's been a minute! My younger driving years were spent almost solely in 84-94 4runners and pick-ups but I've had a long hiatus goofing around with Syncro Vanagon's for the last several years. Now my 18 year old daughter has decided to follow in my footsteps and has scored herself a 95 4runner with a 22re and 5 speed. Needless to say I'm proud and jealous!!
Anyway, this truck was a bit of a project but is complete. PO said it basically just needed timing adjustment. Yeah right. So it runs, but surges terribly whether it's cold or hot. I can't set the timing cause I can't set the idle properly. I've done a smoke test and there's no vacuum leaks but smoke did eventually come out the top of the EGR vacuum module. Which I think is ok? I've adjusted the TPS into spec. Replaced the AFM. Made sure the timing chain/cam marks are correct and aligned with cylinder 1 at TDC. Plugs/cap/rotor/wires all new. Of course this is a late model 22re so there are miles of vacuum hoses. My next guess was to trace each one and make sure they're routed correctly. But I've also been reading a bunch giving me cause to think maybe IACV or EGR issues?
Here's a couple videos of it running. Yes, the pink valve cover is bleh. First one is a cold start and I was trying to test functionality of the IACV buy turning the idle screw all the way closed. But not sure if it gave me any info or not.

Second video is warm and shows jumping the diagnostic connector ports brings the idle down appropriately but then shows the timing being a touch advanced and then stumbling as I turn the distributor to retard the timing. I can't get it to settle in to the 5* mark it's supposed to be at without it stumbling and hardly staying running.

Hopefully those are better clues for some of you gurus. Thanks in advance for your time and help!
