Crawl into the back. There should be an access panel in the center of the rear gate. On my 92, it just pops off with finger pressure, as you slide your fingers between the panel and the inner covering. Then you can get a look at the works.

You may have already done this, but here's somethings to check : Make sure the window lock (up front) is not 'on', try the key in the outside lock to see if you can get it to work that way, make sure the rear wiper is FULLY returned to it's spot in the holder above the window ( safeguards keep the window from rolling down, if the wiper is in use or if it 'thinks' it's in use ). Otherwise,, you may have some loose or corroded groud wires.

My window stopped working off the console controls. Climb in back with a battery remove the black round plug in and run two wires to the two connections inside the plug in then connect them to the battery if you reverse the connection the window will go down so you can fold the tailgate down and get a better look at things w/o being cramped in the back. If the motor is shot the window won't go down. If the wires are cracked or corroded you can clean or replace. Or just run a set of wires up to the dash and hard wire it into a power source with a toggle switch and mount the toggle in the dash. Then just use the toggle to operate the window. Don't forget to inline a fuse or get the power from a fused source. Hope this helps

Something else to consider:
The back window in my 92' quit working not too long after I dumped 64 oz. of Dew on the center control unit (those cup holders are simply too small for modern fast food drink sizes). I don't know how 88's are designed compared to 92's, but I just took out the up/down switch and soaked it in water for about five minutes. When it dried I sprayed electrical contact cleaner all inside it and plugged it back in. The window has quit on me three times and this has always fixed it. To get to the switch I just unscrewed(4) the shifter cover and reached inside the console, squeezed the tabs on the switch and out it came.

You could check if the tailgate is completly closed also.

Mine was stuck down, so I took it to a mechanic friend. He got it up, but broke my box in the process. Now I have to get a new one. Hopefully you can get it down and it will come back up. Good luck.
