stronger alternator

I was woundering if their is a stronger altnator for my 86 toyota pickup. I have two fog light's funning with heater and head lights and it won't Idel because to much power is taken away and turns off. So is their a bigger altnator that will bolt on or little ajustment to make it work?

Search, theres plenty of info on here about this issue. From upgrading to a GM alternator to a alternator out of a MR2 (100watts) to buying a Mean Green alternator ($$$) and much more.

There are shops in Calgary that will rewind your stock alternator anywhere between stock and double, I've talked to a few guys that are happy with them.

I know you arn't going to order from Calgary, but it'd be worth phoning around some local alternator/starter shops to see what they could do for you.

Alterstart has a good reputation...

But most likely, your stock alternator isn't your problem. Try upgrading your ground and power wires first! It's recommended when running a H.O. alternater anyway...

I had mine rebuilt by Boyle Future Tech and highly recommend it.
http://www.ttora.com/forum/showthrea...ght=alternator

Factory rated it at 60A max. At 1500 RPM, it now makes 42A, and 130A at anything over 2500 RPM! Price was very reasonable at $118 (including return shipping) and it took about a week round trip.

I'm a little concerned though, cuz you're not drawing that much current. Before spending any money, make sure all your grounds are good!

How big are your fog lights?
Check to make sure your wiring is good (not cooked) at the alternator and at the battery terminal... 400 watts of lights = 30-40 amps + fan + other componets... yea.. maybe... I guess it could outrun the alternator at idle.

What does your battery voltage drop to?

170 amp drop in for $180 seems like a good deal.

High output alt on 4x4wire

Guys - for our applications, you REALLY need to focus on the low RPM output. It is possible this "mighty" 170A alternator only does 20A at idle, just like the stock one, and then you're still running out of power.

Question 22RE 100 amp MR2?

x2 on the "Will one of those altnators fit in the stock mount for an 22RE?"

can the MR2 100 amp unit fit on a 22re? If so, what's the part number/year of the MR2 alternator?

The write up linked above was for a 3.sl0w modded bracket

Alternator Problems

Are you pulling power from the fuse panel or directly from the battery ?
The best for you system would be hardwired from the battery and switched between ground , also remember to keep your wire gauge large going to these lights as smaller gauge wire would increase amp draw and decrease lamp illumination due to decrease in load voltage - Ohms law rules !
