I tried searching, maybe I just haven't come to the right thread yet but I am trying to find out the stock 3.0 v6 sr5 thirds gear ratio for a 91 truck.

what was factory tire size? or you can jack it up and spin the wheel and count the drive shaft rotations...

Here are the possible options from 1991:

4.10 5sp manual
4.56 Automatic

These are assuming the diffs are still 100% stock. Could have been changed before, best to take the diff out and check

And what happens when the gear ratio has been changed by a previous owner?

This assumes the truck is 100% stock from the factory. Unless a person is the original owner, how can one be sure? There are many mods to my truck that would appear stock to the unknowing eye.

gear code on door .should read something like at/mg292 for example. with the g indication being the diff size ex.8 in.the 29 being the ratio such as 4.10 and the 2 standing for 2 pinion diff

Close, it would be A/TM for Axle/Transmission. You are correct, it will be G292 or something similar

Not in 1991 they didn't. In a 4wd, the only options were 4.10 and 4.56

the only way to be positive is to pull the differential and count. But really you can figure it out, and be pretty confident. Take truck for a drive and watch tach and speedo when you are in 4th gear manual, 3rd for auto at 55 MPH and get you tire size and check out this chart. http://jeephorizons.com/tech/rpmchart.html

My old man wasn't the original owner, he bought it over a decade now. I don't think he's changed anything because he's not the type. I don't know if the previous owner did though. Looks stock and has been that way ever since my old man bought it. It is an Automatic, running on 31s with tow package.

I will try some of the above mention. Thanks again everyone : )

Another question while we're at it, no matter what gears or third member, all inner rear axles are the same right?

you dont have to pull the third member out just to check the ratio DC????

you can do the "rotate tire and count DS rotations" method right??????

hell thats how i find the 4.56 and 4.88 diffs at the junkyards in Toyota's...

if its auto and was on 31's from the factory then it most likely has 4.56's

Pink is 4.10.

I don't know the rest, get off yer lazy rear and check yourself.

My 91 came with 4.56's. I did the spin tire method to find that out, since my cab is from a 90 p/u with a 22re...
